A Program for Children Who Are Affected by Addiction
Hazelden Betty Ford’s pioneering Children's Program, offered in-person at our Greenwood Village facility as well as virtually, helps kids who are impacted by a loved one’s substance abuse.
With content and activities designed for kids ages seven to 12, the Children’s Program is led by highly skilled counselors who blend learning and play through storytelling, small group discussions, games, recreational activities, role-playing and more.
These activities and experiences help children learn that:
- An adult's substance use disorder can never be a kid's fault
- Their family is not alone
- It’s okay to talk about their feelings with people they trust
No child is turned away due to the inability to pay.

Program Options and Schedules
In-Person Children's Program – Offered monthly at our Greenwood Village center, this program runs Thursday through Sunday for about 6-8 hours a day. Children learn age-appropriate information about the disease of addiction, practice sharing their feelings and enjoy fun and games together. As a part of the program, a parent, family member or supportive caregiver is asked to be involved at various times during the four-day program.
Virtual Children's Program – Typically offered on weekends, our two-day (three-hours each day) virtual program introduces children to helpful, age-appropriate information about addiction treatment and recovery and healthy self-care strategies. As part of the program, a parent, family member or supportive caregiver is asked to be available to assist their child when needed.
Virtual Caregiver Workshop – Our one-day (three-hour) workshop is open to all caregivers who help children impacted by a loved one's substance use and/or mental health condition. Caregivers learn what the children are taught in the virtual Children's Program as well as strategies and tools for building and strengthening family recovery. The program's small group format allows caregivers to learn and share with others in similar situations.
More Help and Support for You – Hazelden Betty Ford's continuing care services for kids and families are available both in-person and virtually upon completion of our Children's Program and/or Caregiver Workshop. In addition, our virtual Family Program is available free of charge to anyone concerned about a loved one's alcohol or drug use, no matter where you live or whether your loved one is in active addiction. The one-day online format includes educational videos, peer discussion and support, strategies for self-care, health and well-being, and a Q& A session with counselors.
